High-power lithium-ion batteries are essential to a clean energy transition, supporting electric mobility and renewable energy storage. To ensure a sustainable, circular battery economy, the Global Battery Alliance (GBA) introduced the concept of a battery passport in 2016, creating a digital twin to track supply chain data, usage history, and end-of-life processes.
In 2023, the European Union (EU) formalized this with Regulation 2023/1542, mandating that all Electric Vehicles (EVs) and industrial batteries over 2kWh must include a digital battery passport by February 2027. This presents significant compliance, data-sharing, and lifecycle transparency challenges for Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEMs) and suppliers.
To meet these demands, it is essential to capture accurate, real-time data such as State of Charge (SoC), State of Health (SoH), and usage history. This data forms the foundation of the battery passport, enabling regulatory compliance, safe operations, and informed decision-making across the battery lifecycle.
