Design and Development of Wearable Solutions for Defense Applications

Executive Summary

An American client, (best known for its secure and scalable solutions for mission-critical environments), wanted to obtain competitive advantage by delivering a superior product than that of its competitors (i.e., Humanè AI-pin, Rabbit R1, and others). The customer sought an engineering partner who could support them in every aspect of developing a wearable solution for defense applications. This smart wearable device enhances the performance, safety, and efficiency of the personnel using it. Its applications include, but are not limited to, Bidirectional Translation, Surveillance and Reconnaissance, Situational Awareness and Monitoring, Combat Performance Enhancement, Enhanced Communication, Intelligence Gathering, Post-Mission Data Collection.

The client had stringent mechanical (60 x 60mm for carrier board and 75 x 25 mm for product) and thermal constraints. The customer wanted this AI-enhanced wearable assistant to be designed in such a way that it would perform real-time audio translation between two languages without internet connectivity. Moreover, it was necessary to support command control such as volume change using on-device AI/ML. There was also a very compressed timeline for developing the battery-operated body-worn device.

eInfochips provided a complete solution, based on Aikri 8550 powered by Qualcomm Dragonwing QCS8550, after gathering the requirements which covered all aspects including mechanical, industrial, hardware, firmware, and on-device AI/ML. eInfochips initially performed a component placement analysis based on the mechanical ID and then finalized the industrial design after ID-ME convergence. The team performed a comprehensive analysis on the thermal simulation to finalize the battery design. eInfochips took complete the ownership of the mechanical enclosure design, enclosure prototype build, electro-mechanical fitment check, thermal simulations, hardware design, and development including peripheral boards (i.e., USB-C connector, microphone and LED, user buttons). eInfochips helped the client in developing the peripheral drivers for custom mic, speaker, LED, USB, and Bluetooth and more. In addition, the team also did thermal testing and analyzed device performance. eInfochips extended the support by creating and porting Llama models to Aikri 8550. After doing thermal testing and performance analysis of prototypes, we proposed to the client to partially increase the size of the product enclosure to 90 x 80 x 27mm as compared to 75 x 75 x 25mm to ensure the optimal performance and this was approved by the client.
