QNX to Android Upgrade for Smart Home Console

Executive Summary

The client is a leading home security platform provider for cable networks across USA and Canada. They have more than a million units deployed through six cable networks. The customer was looking to move their product from QNX to Android, to directly save over $10 Million in licensing fees.

The product is based on Freescale i.MX35 processor, that did not have off-the-shelf support for Android. They wanted to have a common OS across all devices, which meant the devices deployed in the field would also need to be moved to Android. This involved a tremendous logistics effort, in addition to the brand impact of a product recall cycle. The solution was to customize Android for the Freescale i.MX35, and upgrade field devices remotely.

The client was able to upgrade more than 200K devices in the field without any human intervention. It saved millions of dollars in logistics and device replacements.
