Powering Next-generation Smart Homes with Qualcomm Snapdragon 410

It’s beyond belief for most people that everyday domestic chores such as turning lights on/off, which require human intervention, can be completely replaced by automated systems. The idea while conceivable may give the impression that it belongs in the distant future. However, latest advances in smart home technologies and reduced cost factor of different components is drawing us closer to the reality of connected homes.

We are increasingly witnessing the adoption of various home automation systems in our daily lives. They range from smart lights that can be controlled remotely or as per a predefined schedule, to
connected home entertainment systems that manage streaming media across multiple screens, and newer forms of access control, e.g.. biometrics, to enhance your home security.

Despite the advent of so many other smart gadgets – thermostats, remote-operated lighting systems and app controls of television and other electronic appliances, fact remains the average person’s home still doesn’t qualify today to be considered a smart home. But thatscene is changing very rapidly. If you were planning to build a house in the next few years, chances are that you would start looking to engage with smart home specialists just as you do with architects, interior decorators and plumbers.

The growth in ‘Internet of Things’ technology has led to affordable and easy to use systems, apps, and hardware to automate the entire home. The implementation of IoT has been made possible due to recent developments in the technology namely, Machine to Machine (M2M) communication, Cloud computing and Mobility.

To obtain maximum benefits from smart home technologies, analytics and intelligence plays an important role in enabling full process automation in addition to connectivity and real time awareness. The purpose is to extend the solutions capability from data capturing/ monitoring to data processing for enabling intelligent decisions and controls in real time.

Up until now, smart home solutions were largely built from the ground up with a high degree of customization to specific requirements. This is what primarily drove up the cost while increasing the complexity of development, which used to deter many prospective entrants to the market. What is really missing today are developer tools/kits that can alleviate the costs associated with building the foundational infrastructure so that smart home solution providers can focus on optimizing the core functionality and bringing solutions to the market more quickly at a lower cost. To address this demand for DIY smart home kits, eInfochips has introduced its Eragon product line comprising of System on Modules and Development kits based on Snapdragon processors. This product line is an ideal solution to initiate the development of smart home platforms.

eInfochips Eragon 410 based on Snapdragon 410, offers high performance, rich multimedia, low power consumption and support for multiple operating systems (Android, Linux, Windows 10).
This can be leveraged for IoT edge computing use cases in smart homes, industrial automation, digital media players, smart surveillance and home appliances, and is designed for longevity.
