4 Fundamental Building Blocks in Designing Remote Device Management for IoT [Video]

The future growth of IoT depends on how well we can achieve remote bulk operations on many devices simultaneously. Here, we will discuss 4 essential building blocks of Remote Device Management (RDM) for the entire lifecycle of your devices.

Remote Device Management (RDM) has become an indispensable requirement in helping enterprises fulfill the vision of IoT. The idea of RDM is achieving bulk operations on many devices simultaneously, gaining access to the health and status information of devices with alerts for failure and deactivation, diagnostics including connectivity status, firmware upgrades, and data/network/device-level security.

Here are a few basic concepts in RDM that one must understand very well for smooth IoT implementation.

1.Device Provisioning

An IoT solution fundamentally works on data derived from sensors, machines, smart meters, in-vehicle systems, wearables, consumer appliances, microcontrollers, powerful gateways and so much more.

For example, in a home automation system, there are multiple sensors and devices – smoke sensors, temperature sensors, alarm, cameras and many more. Initially, all these devices have to register in the network. The process is defined as device provisioning. Registering sensors and devices means giving a unique device ID by which devices and sensors can be identified, whenever required.

2.Device Edge

We have mentioned that the sensors should be able to communicate with the real world based on real time actions. How is that possible?

Here, device edge comes in the picture. Sensors and devices which will be the part of the network have to be connected at a single common point as they all support their respective protocols. The device edge helps all the devices in the network talk to each other and make them capable of taking real time action.

3.Data management and intelligence

Once the devices/sensors are connected, the biggest challenges that emerge in data management and intelligence include data collection, aggregation, process, storage and trigger action as per data. Data collection is possible only with proper connectivity, real time processing, big data solutions and predictive analysis. With data management, there should be simultaneously a provisioning of devices so that the devices which are connected in the network can be managed remotely. The end objective for us is that devices should be constantly monitored along with taking care of firmware updates and cloud integration.

4.APIs

Sometimes, situations do arise when the devices cannot be controlled or fail to work as per your command? In order to deal with such problems, it would be useful to create APIs for a specific application. The role of API is equally important to other parts of the framework. The API should be designed keeping in mind reusable patterns for future and automated deployment. Home automation product-based companies can become capable of diagnosing the health of on-field devices, firmware updates and can add value to their customers.

eInfochips’ Remote Device Management platform has enabled our customers to field their RDM deployment by incorporating devices, delivering high service reliability, reducing operations cost, and maximizing the uptime of devices. We have over 20 years of experience in managing Internet of things, across their entire life cycle, which is evident by a number of critical projects we have dealt with in various industrial verticals.
